Adoption bereavement, sometimes called adoption grief or loss, occurs when an adoptive child begins to realise what being given up for adoption means, and when the true impact of having a birth mother somewhere out there begins to dawn.
Some adopted children experience a grieving process for the loss of their birth parents. This can happen at any time, and the booklet identifies the most common times when this may occur. It describes signs and behaviour that could indicate adoption bereavement and makes suggestions as to how parents can support their children through this period.
